Welcome to Second Grade's Math website! In second grade we are starting our unit on fractions! Students will identify fractional parts of a whole, a set, determine is a fraction is closer to 0, 1/2, or 1.
Vocabulary:Expanded form: The representation of a number as a sum that shows the value of each digit. Example:
500 + 30 + 6 = 536 Hundreds: The number 100 - 999. Also, a number place. Example: in the number 324, 2 is in the hundreds place, and has a value of 200. Thousand: A place value of a number. For example, in 1,253, the 1 is in the thousands place. |

HOMEWORKFor the week of December 5 - 9:
Mrs. Heintskill/Lameris:
Mrs. McKenna's classroom homework:

Homework Tip:
When working with place values and expanded form it is very important to understand the values of the digits in question. For example:
7, 543 is read as seven thousand five hundred forty-three.
The 3 is in the ones, 4 is in the tens, 5 is in the hundreds, and 7 is in the thousands place.
The 7 is worth 7,000
The 5 is worth 500
The 4 is worth 40
The 3 is worth 3.
Now we can put it into expanded form:
7,000 + 500 + 40 + 3 = 7,543
When working with fractions it is always important to remember fractions always represent part of a whole. The Whole must be identified, then the fraction of the whole being considered can be identified. The formula to determine the shaded fraction of a whole is as follows.
Total number of
sections shaded Numerator
-------------------------- = ------------------
Total number of Denominator
equal sections
Heintskill/lameris:
When adding using tens and ones stress that the value of 1 ten is 10, 2 tens is 20, 3 tens is 30 and so on. Be sure to line up place values when adding.
For problem solving strategy: work backwards, read the problem and then start at the end, read backwards and track information step-by-step.
McKenna:
Drawing pictures or creating tables for the information is always a great strategy! Complete tables before solving questions.
